The Fast Lady
how to become a fan of something on facebook

A lady full of eloquence, I see it in her face,
A vibrant budding debutante, with guile and looks and grace,
Sophisticated lady who dined with lords and dames,
She drank champagne and once held court with double barrelled names,
I think she drove a sporty car, in shiny leather gloves,
Her red silk scarf caressed her neck, next to the one she loves,
Could she have flown the country roads in open topped abandon,
A picnic basket in the boot, off to the country mansion,
I may have got the picture wrong, but this how I see her,
Her diction, prose and perfect speech, made peers all want to be her,
And now she tries her very best to maintain style and class,
Up against the toughest foe, a car she cannot pass,
It cuts you deep to see the pain that illness can impart,
To see a lady try to keep her pride with all her heart,
Yet in the depths of her despair, she keeps her sense of fun,
She shares a joke and cheeky jape, she’ll pinch you then she’ll run,
Dementia takes no prisoners, but inner strength prevails,
I see this lady battle on through wind and rain and gales,
I’d love to think her world is bright and harbours no confusion,
Is that too much to ask perhaps? a fairy tale illusion,
She’ll pass me in the corridor and give a wistful smile,
I grab this gift so eagerly and hold it for a while,
We need to see behind the mask this illness puts in place,
To cherish all our elder friends who struggle with lifes race,
I’m sure that even just a word or something nice to say,
Would give our friends a little love to ease their troubled day,
And as I watch this lady pass and give a morning greeting,
I hope her times of sunny drives are long and never fleeting.

how to become mutual friends on facebook

Kel

Today I had lunch with Kel and Jo.

Kel and I were a couple for about 5 weeks when I was 15. It doesn’t get more innocent than our ill-fated relationship (holding hands was about as far as it went). I had no idea. Our mutual attraction was more than likely the result of our class having just completed 8 weeks of an outdoor education camp where everyone depended on everyone else to pull their weight and everyone became incredibly close to their peers.

Anyway, after we came to a mutal agreement that it wasn’t working (namely, we mutually agreed that she was dumping me) we remained good friends for a few years. Perhaps inevitably, people drift apart and we didn’t see each other for close to 10 years.

I recently reconnected on Facebook with another classmate, Jo, who had remained in contact with Kel over the years, suggested lunch and invited Kel along. Since I was back in town on holidays and I hadn’t seen either of them for so long, I jumped at the chance to have lunch with them for old times’ sake.

It was fun. It was comfortable. I had a good time and conversation flowed easily. It also served as a reminder of how much shared history can compensate for having little in common as time goes on.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that after nearly 10 years, it was still possible to have a fun, free and relaxing conversation of several hours over lunch.

As much as people change and move on, there is always the past to share with each other.
